Why we should make Christmas a very special time
>For Christians Christmas is a very special time. It is the time when families come together and each in their own way celebrates the birth of Christ. Even non practicing Christians and members of other faiths tend to make the 25th of December a very special day. Special food, decorations, gifts and parties all go towards making it really a day to remember for many.
It is often said that the more commercialised Christmases that are a feature of modern society are purely for the children. This may be true in many ways but it is often the memory of our own happy childhood Christmases that make us want to push out the boat and buy gifts and entertain our family and friends.
The Christmas Days portrayed in the Charles Dickens stories Pickwick Papers and A Christmas Carol were a lot less stressful than todays frantic rush to get everything done before the day. Decorations, both indoor and outdoors have to be set up a Christmas .wreath hung on the door and food purchased and prepared. This is even before presents have been purchased wrapped and labelled. It is little wonder that by Christmas Eve people can begin to long for the whole event to be over.
On Christmas day you are doing much more than giving Christmas gifts and having a special meal, you are creating memories for yourself and your children. If you have good memories of the Christmas Days when you were young surely you would like to give your children similar memories. If you are one of the unfortunate ones whose early Christmas Days were less than enjoyable you should not want your own children to have the same experience.
In today’s commercial world you may think that the only way is to spend loads of money but this is not so. The buy Christmas off the shelf attitude of many people misses the whole point of the celebration. Inexpensive gifts, craft items and handmade Christmas cards can bring as much pleasure as much more expensive shop purchased items. Surely something that has required thought and taken time and effort to produce is far better than quickly grabbed item from a store shelf.
The real secret to an enjoyable and stress free Christmas is to plan ahead and avoid that last minute panic that typifies many peoples Christmas. You owe it to yourself and your family to have a memorable and special Christmas this year.
